Fez – The Morocco-Spain diplomatic crisis shows no signs of abating as various Spanish political parties issue complaints about Morocco’s fish farm in the Chafarinas Islands.
Following in the footsteps of Spain’s far-right parties that have denounced Madrid’s conciliatory stance toward Rabat, the Spanish far-left is now raising similar questions about the lack of a forceful Spanish reaction to Moroccan fish farms in the chafarinas islands.
In a written question addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Senator Mulet Garcia of Valencian Parliament of Coalició Compromís asked him to explain the efforts his government has taken to ensure the respect of Spain’s “territorial waters,” according to the Spanish outlet El Faro de Melilla.
“Morocco established a fish farm near the Chafarinas Islands months ago,” the Valencian representative said, adding: “Navy ships that monitor the maritime areas of Spanish sovereignty warned ‘months ago’ of Morocco’s plans to build a fish farm near the Chafarinas Islands, according to sources in the naval branch of the Armed Forces.”
Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded on January 21, saying it had “strengthened” its activities by “communicating with Morocco through the usual diplomatic channels” about the Moroccan-run fish farm’s existence.

Right-wing parties in Spain are also dissatisfied with Madrid’s moderate approach to Morocco in the face of unresolved differences on territorial matters.
Spain’s People’s Party (PP) and the far-right VOX parties have previously issued a storm of protests against the Moroccan-run fish farm. Both parties pressed Pedro Sanchez’s cabinet to take forceful action in response to alleged Moroccan provocations.
In response, Sanchez’s cabinet explained to the right-wing parties that the government has taken “actions with communication with Morocco through the usual procedure, namely diplomatic channels.”
