Rabat – The latest updates on the United Arab Emirates’ travel list saw Morocco return to the green list of countries from which travelers can enter Abu Dhabi without needing to quarantine.
The list also includes other North African countries, such as Algeria and Tunisia.
The Gulf state accepts all vaccines approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). Non-vaccinated travelers must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test upon entry to the country.
In December 2021, Morocco announced a nationwide travel ban in reaction to the spread of Omicron, the latest COVID-19 variant.
Despite having the highest vaccination rate on the African continent, Morocco closed its borders just ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.
As of 2022, over half of Morocco’s population is fully vaccinated and three million people have already received a third booster jab.
Amid concerns over rising cases of COVID, Morocco deployed a number of early response measures ranging from banning public gatherings to imposing a curfew on New Year’s Eve.
Experts predict that Morocco’s Omicron wave will likely end by spring 2022. However, people reluctant to receive the COVID jabs are likely to complicate governmental efforts to limit health risks related to contracting the virus.
Morocco enacted a vaccine mandate in 2021, requiring citizens to present proof of vaccination to enter public facilities and public transit. The measure encouraged reluctant people to receive the vaccine at the readily available vaccination centers.
Despite the widespread vaccination campaign, Omicron poses a severe health risk. Reports suggest vaccines are not enough to fully offset the symptoms of the newest and extremely contagious COVID variant.
Modena, an American giant pharmaceutical, has already declared it is developing a possible Omicron booster shot. Other vaccine manufacturers have announced similar plans.
