Rabat – Local authorities are getting closer to rescuing 5-year old Rayane, who has been trapped in a watering hole for more than two days. Civil protection services have dug a 22-meter shaft alongside the well in which the boy is trapped, placing them within 10 meters of the unfortunate child.
The rescue operation is ongoing in the Tamorot commune in Morocco’s Chefchaouen province to save a five-year-old boy who fell into a well on Tuesday, February 1.
State news agency MAP quoted local services, which are conducting excavation work in an attempt to rescue Rayane.
The excavation work reached a depth of more than 22 meters at the time of writing. The well in which the five-year-old Rayane fell into is 32 meters deep.
Local authorities commented that rescue efforts will not stop until they rescue the child.
“The digging and dredging operations are difficult and vary from depth to depth due to different soil components or the presence of stones,” local authorities added.
Civil service workers began the rescue operation on the morning of Wednesday, February 2.
Hundreds of Moroccans of all ages are showing support for and solidarity with Rayane and his family.
Some locals attempted to go down the well, but attempts failed due to the narrowness of the crevice in which the boy is trapped.
Morocco also deployed a royal gendarmerie medical helicopter to transport the child immediately after his rescue to a hospital facility for first aid.
An ambulance with medical staff is also present on the site.
“The authorities have mobilized all the means necessary to make this rescue operation a success in addition to setting up a monitoring and follow-up committee,” which has to manage the operation and study all possible risks, the source added.
Social media networks are overflowing with posts from people across Morocco and beyond, calling for more efforts to rescue Rayane. The hashtag #SaveRayane is viral on all major platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
The Moroccan government said they are “carefully monitoring the ongoing rescue efforts” of the five-year-old boy.
The government confirmed that it has the capabilities and equipment needed to save Rayane.
