FEZ – Morocco’s National Tourist Office (ONMT) announced on Monday, February 2, that it has reached an agreement with Spanish flag carrier Iberia for the resumption of its flights to and from Morocco amid the reopening of Moroccan airspace.
An ONMT delegation landed in Spain for the final round of its roadshow across Europe, to meet with major Spanish tourism operators. ONMT’s director-general Adel El Fakir led discussions with the Spanish national airline, Iberia, on the same day of the reopening of Morocco’s air borders.
The meeting was an opportunity to finalize an agreement that includes, among other provisions aimed at helping Moroccan tourism recover, the resumption of Iberia flights to and from Moroccan destinations.
Iberia has announced a 100% capacity restoration on the Madrid-Tangier route at a rate of 7 weekly frequencies. The company also revealed a 76% capacity resumption on the Madrid-Marrakech route at 9 weekly frequencies.
ONMT and Iberia intend to strengthen their strategic collaboration from the summer 2022 season onwards. The collaboration is projected to promote Morocco as a destination across Iberia’s network, which includes over 100 flight routes to European and South American cities. This could result in major improvements in connectivity to Casablanca, Marrakech, and Tangier.
The ONMT chief is optimistic about air travel to boost Morocco’s tourism revival. El Fakir said that Morocco’s “combat horse is now the air,” noting that the “current goal is to obtain major airlines’ capacity in order to kick-start a speedy revival of tourism activity in Morocco.”
As part of Morocco’s efforts to revitalize its tourism sector, El Fakir met with executives from the European Directorate of the Expedia Group, a global behemoth in online travel distribution and one of the most important participants in the online sale of travel to Morocco.
The meeting was intended to pave the way for a joint communication and a speedy return of Morocco’s sales to achieve a commercial offer of around 440,000 bed nights for the 2022 summer, representing an 80% recovery of previously achieved objectives during summer 2019.
The Madrid stage concludes the first commercial, promotional, and communication tour of the ONMT, initiated a week ago in three of the main markets of Morocco, namely France, the United Kingdom, and Spain to accelerate the promising mood of recovery accompanying the reopening of the Moroccan air Borders.
El Fakir held meetings with tourism operators in the three European countries to speed up the revival of Morocco’s hospitality industry after more than two months of border closure.
The sector was the most hit by the closure of borders, and Moroccan tourism authorities and professionals hope for the reopening of borders to put Morocco back on the map of preferred destinations among travel enthusiasts around the world.
