Moroccan international Yassine Bounou has reaffirmed that Morocco’s Atlas Lions are vying for qualification to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Bounou pointed out that they have all the necessary tools to accomplish this objective, in an interview with Morocco’s state news agency.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper highlighted that Morocco’s squad has got over their disappointing defeat at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and is now fully motivated and prepared to win the much-anticipated game against the Democratic Republic of Congo, scheduled to take place in March.
He further stressed that “the big moment has come” as the team’s main objective since the appointment of Vahid Halilhodzic as head coach has been to book a ticket to the world’s most prestigious football competition.
“Our main objective, since the appointment of Morocco’s national team head coach, Vahid Halilhodzic, is to participate in the World Cup to be held in Qatar and hence restore the image of Moroccan football on the international scene,” Bounou stressed.

The goalkeeper, who plays for Spanish club Sevilla, has also commented on his nomination as LaLiga’s best mid-season African player, highlighting that “he is honored to represent Moroccan and African football in this important and competitive league.”
Earlier in February, Bounou received the new LaLiga Santander Mid-Season African MVP Award for his eye-catching performances with the Spanish club.
The award was based on fans’ votes following a poll launched by the Spanish league on its social media accounts.
In the vote, Bounou topped the list of competing footballers for the prize, surpassing other renowned contestants, such as Villarreal’s striker Samuel Chukwueze and his teammate Youssef En Nesyri, who secured the third position.
