Morocco decided on February 24 to lift the ban on stadium-attendance for football fans during a meeting between the Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and the president of the Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF) Fouz Lekjaa.

The return of crowds at live matches in Moroccan stadiums is to take place based “on the legal requirements related to managing the state of emergency,” according to a statement from the head of the government.

The statement outlined that football fans will be allowed back in stadiums in accordance with the recommendations of the Scientific and Technical Committee, and taking into account the improving epidemiological situation in the North African country.

Akhannouch urged the FRMF’s president to deploy necessary preventive measures in order to ensure a successful return to stadiums.

The statement made no clear mention of measures to be followed by fans eager to return to stadiums.

However, Chakib Benmoussa, Morocco’s Minister of Education, Preschool, and Sports, has previously stated that “reopening stadiums hinges on receiving the  COVID-19 vaccine booster,” which is becoming a common health requirement in all sectors in Morocco.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, fans have been prohibited from attending games in stadiums.

Fans of Moroccan football clubs have been calling for several months for the government to reopen stadiums.

The North African country is deploying efforts to ensure the return to a normal life. With the positive evolution of the epidemiological situation, Morocco reopened its air borders on February 7, in an effort to revive the tourism sector which was hit worst by the pandemic.

The government has urged citizens and professionals in vital sectors to get the free booster shot in order to ensure a gradual return to normal life. Morocco’s prime minister said earlier that only mass vaccination of the population will allow the country to return to a regular economic rhythm free of public health constraints.

Moroccans are positive about an economic relaunch that will help revive the country’s economic and vital sectors.
