Rabat – Travelers in a Qatar airways flight from Doha to Casablanca witnessed a situation of chaos last week as one of the passengers who was in a hysterical state attempted to open the door of the airplane as it was flying at an altitude of 12,000 meters.

In the video, which has been going viral on social media, one passenger is heard saying, “We were just sitting when we suddenly heard him shouting. He hit the man in front of him and headed towards the door.”

The Qatar Airways crew and passengers overpowered him, the passenger added.

According to converging media reports, one of the passengers, a world champion in jiu-jitsu, managed to tightly control the unruly passenger as the crew handcuffed him in one of the seats.

Upon landing, the passenger was handed over to the security authorities at the Mohammed VI International Airport in Casablanca.

It remains unclear wether he was trying to commit suicide or he was dealing with a severe episode of claustrophobia.

While extremely unusual, attempts of opening the door of a flying plane do occur. Last week, an unruly passenger tried to open the door of an American Airlines.

The American passenger was subsequently charged with one count of interference with a flight attendant.

A similar incident happened onboard a Paris-Marrakech flight in 2019 after a Moroccan traveler attempted to open the door of the plane 15 minutes after takeoff, forcing the pilot to return to the airport.
