Rabat – Morocco and Romania have agreed to resume cooperation to ensure the safe reception of Moroccans feeling Ukraine.
Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita organized a March 2 phone call with his Romanian counterpart Bogdan Aurescu regarding the situation of Moroccans fleeing Ukraine through Romania’s border.
Aurcescu shared with Bourita his country’s assessment of the security developments in the region, stressing that his country will continue its solidarity with all its partners, especially by providing protection and consular assistance to foreign nationals.
The Romanian minister reviewed his country’s measures to properly manage the flow of people across the border.
During the call, Bourita expressed satisfaction with Romania’s measures to manage the situation, thanking the country for its support to facilitate the safe evacuation of Moroccan citizens from Ukraine.
Bourita recalled Moroccans’ appreciation to Romanians for the warm welcome they received while crossing borders to escape the conflict.
“Since the beginning of the crisis until now, more than 1,700 Moroccan citizens have benefited from the support of the Romanian authorities on the Romanian-Ukrainian border,” the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Romania also recalled the deep cooperation and bilateral relations the two countries share.
The two ministers affirmed their desire to deepen political dialogue and develop cooperation at all levels.
Bourita and his Romanian counterpart concluded the call by agreeing to exchange visits to further expand diplomatic ties.
Over 5,000 Moroccans have fled Ukraine to date, through the EU borders with Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, and Poland.
Morocco scheduled special low-cost Royal Air Maroc flights to urgently repatriate Moroccans from the four aforementioned countries.
Yesterday, Royal Air Maroc carried out two flights carrying over 300 people evacuating Ukraine.
