Rabat – With the presence of public officials, private investors, and startups from across Africa, the Startups accelerator program, Plug and Play, in association with Morocco’s UM6P Ventures, and phosphate giant group OCP, welcomed the third batch of startups in Casablanca last Friday.
Aiming to assist startups to accelerate their growth rate, the Silicon Valley-based initiative offers Moroccan and African startups technical know-how, access to state-of-the-art facilities within UM6P, and networking opportunities to find potential investors.
After welcoming the 2022 batch of African startups, the event started with a short presentation from organizers on the African startup ecosystem, sharing key data related to the evolution of investment and strongest performing subsectors.
The event also hosted two panel discussions on the state of the African startup ecosystem and the Moroccan regulatory landscape.
The first panel discussion included representatives and CEOs from four capital ventures operating in Morocco and Africa, including Morocco’s Yasser Biaz, CEO of UM6P Ventures, a capital venture affiliated with innovation-oriented Polytechnic Mohammed VI University.
During the discussion, participants addressed many issues pertaining to access to funding and how local regulations may stimulate the growth of a startup’s ecosystem.
Regarding the second panel discussion, officials from Morocco’s state institutions, including the fiance ministry deliberated on Morocco’s recent achievement and what needs to be done to further boost the national startup ecosystem.
Between panel discussions, the 12 startups from the 2021 Plug and Play program delivered pitches on stage to promote their innovative solutions and raise funds.
Startups from Morocco, Tunisia, Uganda, and other African countries were present at the event to network, connect with investors, and “learn from the best” as a Ugandan startup CEO told Morocco World News.
