Rabat – The Arab League Council renewed its support for the Skhirat agreement as the general political framework to find a solution to the Libya crisis.
The Arab League additionally renewed support for the UN-led political process to end the crisis on the basis of the Skhirat agreement, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions and the conclusions of both the Berlin and Paris summits.
In line with Morocco’s position, the council rejected any form of foreign interference in the Libyan dossier, reaffirming commitment to the unity and sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
The council supports the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya, without exception and within a specific timeframe, welcoming all measures seeking to ensure stability and peace.
Morocco has long called for the end of interference in Libya, supporting all initiatives seeking to help Libyan parties to find a consensual and an agreed-upon political solution to end the conflict.
Beside the Skhirat agreement, Morocco also convened parties to the Libyan conflict in roundtables in Bouznika and Tangier as part of its mediating efforts.
The North African country, however, remained a solution to the Libya conflict should be discussed exclusively among Libyan parties, rejecting all interference.
“Morocco’s involvement stems from the strong and sincere ties and human bonds existing between the two peoples,” Moroccan Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita said in 2021.
Morocco’s initiative has been receiving applause from the international community.
US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman who visited Rabat this week renewed her country’s satisfaction with Morocco’s mediation efforts.
Sherman outlined Morocco’s positive role and important contribution” in supporting the UN-led political process in Libya.
A joint statement of Bourita and Wendy said following their meeting earlier this week: “The Foreign Minister and Deputy Secretary reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity of Libya and the priority for organizing national elections in the near term,” according to the joint statement.
