Rabat – The US has been Spain’s largest gas supplier since January of this year, ahead of Algeria and Nigeria, according to a report by Enagas, Spain’s national energy company.
Enagas released a report in February 2022 detailing a list of the countries from which Spain imports gas. Algeria was Spain’s largest gas supplier in 2021. However, the US eclipsed the North African nation in January 2022.
The US exported 13,103 GWh of liquid natural gas to Spain in January 2022, with an increase of 568.18% from January 2021, when the US only exported 1,961 GWh.
Meanwhile, Algeria exported in January 2022 9,620 Gwh of natural gas but no liquid natural gas. A decrease of 22% from January 2021, amounting to 12,466 GWh of natural gas, as well as a 100% drop in liquid natural gas (2,885 GWh in January 2021).
Nigeria comes in as Spain’s third largest exporter of gas, with the West African country exporting in January 2022 5,045 GWh of liquid natural gas to Spain, an increase of 82.92% from January 2021’s 2,758 GWh.

The United States is currently Spain’s largest gas exporter with a portion of 34.6% of the total gas exported. Algeria dropped to second place with 25.4% of the total gas exported. Meanwhile, Nigeria looks poised to claim Algeria’s current position with 13.3% of the total gas exported.
The report indicates that Nigeria’s share will steadily rise and overcome Algeria as Spain is looking for other places to import gas from.
This decline of gas imported from Algeria reflects Spain’s desire to diversify its sources of natural gas due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
