Rabat – Morocco’s judicial police on March 16 referred 70 individuals, including 18 minors, to the investigating judge at Rabat’s court of appeal following recent football riots at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Acts of vandalism that followed the match between FAR Rabat and MAS from Fes on Sunday, caused severe material damage inside and outside the stadium.

The arrests took place after the police reviewed records from surveillance cameras in the stadium to identify those involved in the violence after the football match that resulted in a loss for the home team.

The defendants were brought before the prosecutor’s office, while a request was filed to conduct an investigation against 42 adults for forming a criminal gang, sabotaging equipment by force, robbery, attempted rape, and obstruction of the movement of vehicles on a public highway.

The 42 individuals will also be investigated for intentional violence during a sporting event, stone-throwing, insults and violence against police officers and auxiliary forces, accessing a stadium in possession of weapons, and causing the deterioration of public utility property.

After the first hearing of the defendants, the investigating judge decided to detain the suspects.

A request was also filed to open an investigation by the Juvenile Adviser against 10 juvenile defendants prosecuted for the above-mentioned acts and ordered that they be placed in the juvenile pavilion in the prison.

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said on March 14 that 85 policemen suffered injuries of varying severity, among them 63 wounded were transferred to Ibn Sina University Hospital.

The police noted that 14 injured police officers were kept in the Specialized Hospital, and 8 wounded were transferred to the Military Hospital in Rabat.

Meanwhile, 18 members of the auxiliary forces and 57 civilians suffered injuries.
