Rabat – Morocco’s Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), the OCP Group, and oil industry company SHELL is set to launch a project to find the best way to produce low-carbon ammonia from renewable energy sources.

The UM6P, Moroccan phosphorus company OCP and Shell have signed an agreement to launch the pilot project to see if it is possible to produce low-carbon ammonia using hydrogen from renewable energy sources on a large scale, the UM6P said in a press release on March 22.

“We are confident that collaboration between universities and industries in general can have an immediate impact not only on businesses, but also on the environment,”Mohammed Bousseta, Director of “Innovate for Industry” at UM6P said.

The project, which will be conducted in the Jorf Lasfar industrial area, near El Jadida city, focuses on using more hydrogen from renewable energy sources,  instead of oil and gas to produce ammonia.

A representative from the OCP highlighted that the project is in line with the group’s innovation and sustainable development strategy.

Meanwhile, Rida Sabri, General Manager for New Business Development in the MENA region at Shell noted that researchers, scientists, and engineers at the oil and gas company are committed to developing and using technology to create energy that is more environmentally friendly.

Morocco is a regional and global leader when it comes to renewable energy. The country pledged this year to reach 80% of renewable energy use by 2050.

Meanwhile, Moroccan phosphate and fertilizer giant OCP covered 89% of its energy needs with renewables in 2020, and aims to reach 100% in 2030.

The UM6P has also shown notable commitment to green energy and sustainability and was recognized last week as a “Climate Hero” by the Youth Constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (YOUNGO).
