Morocco’s security services in the Casablanca region arrested on Saturday night seven people for their alleged links to a drug trafficking network.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said today that security services made the arrests in simultaneous operations in the Bernoussi neighborhood in Casablanca and in the city of Mohammedia near Casablanca.
During the operations, police seized two cars suspected of being used in drug trafficking activities.
Police seized 18,900 tablets of psychotropic pills, DGSN noted, adding that the security operation was the result of close cooperation with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
According to the statement, police also seized a sizable amount of cash and put all the suspects in custody while investigations continue to identify possible accomplices involved with the drug trafficking network.
The joint operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and smuggling networks.
Earlier this week, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative in Vienna, Azzedine Farhane, outlined the country’s approach against drug trafficking during a debate at the 65th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
The Moroccan ambassador called on UN bodies to contribute to creating “synergies and creating momentum to strengthen cooperation” to assist member states in the global fight against drugs.
He also noted Morocco’s conviction that shared responsibility is key to strengthening approaches seeking to tackle the challenge of drug trafficking around the world.
In 2021, Morocco seized over 191 tonnes of cannabis. Police also seized over 1.4 million psychotropic tablets, including 53,756 ecstasy tablets.
