Rabat – The Moroccan national taekwondo team won a gold and a bronze medal on the first day of the International Taekwondo Tournament in Bulgaria, the Rasmus Sofia Open 2022.
The Moroccan Royal Taekwondo Federation (FRMTKD) was happy to announce that Moroccan champions Soufiane Assbi and Abdelbasset Wasfi are the recipients of the gold and bronze medals.
The first place ranking belongs to Soufiane Assbi, who qualified from the first round thanks to classification advantage at weighing less than 87 kilograms.

Assbi beat the Hungarian representative in the second round with a score of 7 – 5, as well as the Mexican player in the quarter-finals with a score of 8 – 6.
Assbi won the semi-finals against the Bosnian player with a score of 10 – 2, qualifying to the finals where he beat the British champion with the golden point after three rounds with a score of 6 – 6.
Abdelbaset Wasfi ranked third in his category, weighing less than 63 kilograms), surpassing the Austrian player by 20 points in the first round.
Wasfi overtook the Cypriot player in the second round with a score of 8 – 6.
Wasfi outperformed the Canadian player in the quarter-finals with the golden point after the three-rounds ended with an 8 – 8 tie.
Wasfi finally lost against the Belgian player with a score of 10 – 9.
Houda Heddadi (weight less than 57 kilograms) overtook the Serbian player in the first round with the withdrawal of the latter, to then outperform the Lithuanian player by 9 – 8.
Heddadi lost in the quarter-finals against the Belgian player with a result of 6 – 0.
The champion Safia Saleh (weight less than 62 kilograms) won against the Swedish player in the first match in the quarter-finals by 11 – 0.
In the second round, Saleh beat the Hungarian player by 10 – 6, to be defeated in the quarter-finals by the Canadian player with a result of 13 – 7.
Sakina Saheb (weight less than 49 kilograms) won against the Bosnian player in the first round with a score of 19 – 4, to eventually disqualify in the second round against the Spanish player with a score of 8 – 0.
Both Meryem Khoulal (less than 62 kilograms) and Khalid Daoudi (less than 74 kilograms) got defeated as the Hungarian player won against Khoulal with a result of 10 – 8, while the Belgian player outperformed Daoudi with a score of 18 – 4.
The Moroccan Royal Taekwondo Federation stated that “winning a gold and a bronze medal on the first day will make the Moroccan team strongly compete for one of the high ranks of teams’ general rankings.”
