US Charge d’Affaires David Greene emphasized the importance of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between his country and Morocco.
On Wednesday, Greene spoke about Morocco’s potential to consolidate bilateral ties and promote growth between the US and Morocco.
Greene’s remarks came as part of a visit of a US delegation to Morocco. The US official said that the visit of the delegation “gives new impetus to the efforts made to strengthen commercial ties” between Rabat and Washington.
The delegation participated in a multi-sectoral B2B [Business-to-Business] meeting organized by the commercial department at the US Consulate General in Casablanca on Wednesday.
The meeting included a delegation representing 12 American companies and various actors from the Moroccan business community.
“We discussed with participants how this FTA has helped increase business opportunities between the United States and Morocco, expand trade, and create thousands of jobs for the benefit of our two countries,” he said.
Since the FTA between the two countries entered into force in 2006, trade between the two countries has quintupled to allow more than 120 American companies to operate in the North African country, he explained.
“Since the entry into force of the FTA, the U.S. goods trade surplus with Morocco has risen to $1.8 billion in 2011, up from $79 million in 2005 (the year prior to entry into force),“ according to the Office of the US Trade Representative.
Greene additionally commented on the benefits of the reopening of air borders, which contributed to the ongoing economic recovery in Morocco.
He said that the current circumstances “requires us to act together to promote peace and security and build peaceful productive ties, like the model that the United States and Morocco have built through their common history.”
The delegation’s visit is within the framework of the Trade Winds Middle East and Africa event, a US-led trade mission that organizes business trips to several countries in the North Africa and the Middle-East region.
The visits help US companies explore new markets to increase activities and create business connections that help businesses achieve both exposure and growth.
