Rabat – Morocco’s business landscape is the fourth most competitive of all Arab countries, after the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

The ranking is based on data collected by regional organization the Arab Monetary Fund between 2017 and 2020 (AMF).

The index comprises data on member countries’ overall economic performance and business landscape attractiveness.

Regarding economic performance, Morocco’s Real Gross Domestic Production (GDP) averaged 0.31% over the four years, ranking 4th out of 17 Arab states.

Morocco’s openness to exterior trade ranked 9th, while the country’s reserve of foreign currency ranked 10, AMF data said.

In terms of the business environment, Morocco ranked third for investor protection, second for how easy it is to start a business in the country, and eighth for its tax advantages.

The country’s internet infrastructure ranked 8th, with internet penetration reaching  84% in 2020.

Morocco’s government efficiency ranked 7th and seventh in terms of administrative corruption, the report specifies.

The economic performance index measures governments’ efficiency in providing economic and social stability underpinning an economy’s productivity and competitiveness.

The business landscape attractiveness index measures the different policies adopted to enhance the business climate and attract local and foreign investors.

In recent years, Morocco’s ranking within international business indexes has significantly improved. The country ranked 53 in 2020 in the World Bank’s global index that measured how easy it is to do business in countries, climbing seven places in the span of one year.

Morocco’s efforts to become a regional business hub peaked in 2021 when the country launched an ambitious international marketing campaign “Morocco Now.”

The campaign boasts the many advantages Morocco offers to foreign investors including access to over 1 billion customers through Morocco’s over 45 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
