Rabat – Morocco’s Food Safety Office (ONSSA) has launched an operation to identify healthy livestock for consumption in Eid Al Adha 2022.
The operation is ongoing under the aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Waters and Forests, ONSSA said in a statement on April 4.
Eid Al Adha, is another holy festivity in Islam. The eid commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Ismail, reflecting his obedience to God’s command.
Muslims traditionally celebrate Eid by sacrificing a sheep, goat, or other livestock to commemorate the event.
ONSSA said that the identification operation is performed free of charge for the benefit of all fattening breeders.
ONSSA identifies healthy livestock for Eid Al Adha by putting a yellow tag on one of their ears.
The tag includes a serial number unique to each Eid Al Adha livestock. The tag also includes “Eid Al Adha.”
The operation is part of ONSSA’s monitoring of the quality of animal feed, medicines used on farms, and fattening units.
The identification of sheep and goats intended for slaughter for Eid Al-Adha allows citizens to acquire identified animals, thus facilitating their traceability if necessary, underlines the Office.
During Eid Al Adha 2021, ONSSA identified 7.2 million livestock, including sheep and goats.
“Since January 2022, ONSSA’s veterinary services have recorded more than 242,000 sheep and goat breeding and fattening units,” the statement said.
ONSSA established that the monitoring of the state of health is permanently ensured by the veterinary services of ONSSA across Morocco in collaboration with the mandated health veterinarians and the support of the local authorities.
Eid Al Adha is expected to take place in July. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs will announce the official date a few days prior to the festivity.
