Rabat – Morocco’s Mohammed V University in Rabat ranks as the 28th best in Africa and 1201th worldwide, according to the QA World University Rankings 2022.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an annual publication of university rankings, has published its best universities in the world for 2022.
Out of 1,300 universities, there are only 31 universities based in Africa who made it to the ranking, most of them in South Africa and Egypt.
Each university was evaluated according to six key indicators: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), faculty/student ratio (20%), citations per faculty – contribution to research – (20%), international faculty ratio (5%), and international student ratio (5%).
For the academic survey, QA collects the opinions of 130,000 experts in higher education s on the teaching and research quality of the world’s universities. The best universities are those who score closer to 100 in this indicator.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), comes first worldwide for the 10th consecutive year with a full score.
The University of Oxford (UK) comes second, ahead of Stanford University (USA), University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) and Harvard University (USA).
Only 31 African universities are included in the QS World University Rankings 2022 with the top 3 in the continental level being in South Africa: University of Cape Town (226th worldwide), University of Witwatersrand (424th), and University of Johannesburg (434th).
Egypt made it to the list with 13 universities, followed by South Africa (nine), three Tunisian universities, two in Sudan, one in Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, and Morocco.
Last year, 13 Moroccan universities were ranked among the 650 best universities and 850 best academic and research institutions worldwide, according to the international Scimago Institutions Ranking.
Most of the 13 universities outpaced their regional peers in computer science, engineering, energy and mathematics while 11 of them performed remarkably well in STEM majors such as agronomy, biology, chemistry, and environmental sciences.
