Rabat – Morocco’s economy and finance ministry issued a warning on Wednesday about a number of text messages sent to  Moroccans telling them they have been granted financial aid, claiming to be from the ministry.

The message was defused on WhatsApp, a messaging service, claiming to be from the ministry and bearing its emblem, according to a report from Morocco’s press agency (MAP) on Wednesday.

The message informs the receivers that they became recipients of a direct government aid of MAD 3,700 ($370), the ministry said in a statement.

The text further invited recipients to register on a website to benefit from the grant, the statement added.

Following the incident, the ministry issued a statement to the public that said it is not responsible for the message and that the website mentioned in the text does not belong to the ministry.

In the statement, the ministry stressed that the content of the message is false, calling on the public to remain vigilant and refrain from sharing the message with others.

The ministry especially warns the recipients of the message against clicking the link embedded in the text

The ministry added that it holds the right to pursue legal action against the parties involved in defusing the messages, should the ministry deems the action to be necessary.
