Rabat – Nearly 90% of French expatriates in Morocco who voted in Sunday’s presidential elections cast their ballots in favor of winner Emmanuel Macron, according to the French embassy in Morocco.
Voters re-elected Macron on Sunday for a second five-year term after winning 58.55% of votes against his far-right rival Marine Le Pen who won 41.8% of the vote.
Even though the number of registered voters in Morocco increased by 11% compared to 2017, the participation of French voters in the North African country during that time decreased by 9%, to 44.1%.
Le Pen received 2,016 votes from the French nationals living in Morocco in comparison to 1,339 in 2017, while Macron received only 14,037 votes compared to 15,868 in 2017.
Macron was the most voted candidate in polling offices in the Moroccan cities of Agadir (72.1%), Casablanca (91%), Fes (92.2%), Marrakech (78.4%), Rabat (90.9%), and Tangier (89%).
Agadir is the city with the highest percentage of people voting for Le Pen with 27.9% of the votes cast, increasing by 9.3% in comparison to 2017.
Even though votes of French expatriates in Morocco favored Macron, the number of people who voted for Le Pen increased by 4.8% in comparison to the last presidential elections.
France’s Ministry of Interior has announced that Emmanuel Macron won 86,14% of the votes of all French people living outside the European country, while Le Pen received 13.96%.
Jean-Luc Melenchon received the most votes from French expatriates living in Morocco in the election’s first round earlier this month with 6,947 votes (40.24%), followed by Macron with 6,538 votes (37.88%).
Sunday’s election saw France’s highest abstention rate in 50 years after a considerable number of voters had said that they would not vote for either Le Pen or Macron during the second round.
