Rabat – Casablanca’s municipality has decided to open the door to offers from companies that can help alleviate the city’s street garbage problem.
The task is of high importance and is an important issue to the city’s residents and authorities, Casablanca’s vice-mayor Moulay Ahmed Afilal said on Thursday.
Although the initial plan was to impose a tax that would go towards the city’s cleaning and treatment of street litter, the city decided to instead call for bids from contractors, with the tax plan still being considered for eventual application.
The tax plan was scheduled for a vote in February, but the vote was canceled at the last minute.
In addition to piles of garbage, citizens have also complained about debris from construction scattered around the city.
Per local law, applicants for building or demolition permits are obligated to pay for and organize the transport and disposal of the debris.
Citizens have voiced complaints about the debris and other hygiene issues to city officials, citing it as a big concern because of its effect on the presentation and cleanliness of the city.
