Rabat – In preparation for the upcoming campaign for qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed the draw results live on Tuesday, April 19.
During the draw, which took place at the studios of the SuperSport channel in Johannesburg, South Africa, Morocco’s national team was placed in Group K, alongside Liberia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
The 2023 AFCON, which marks the championship’s 24th edition, will take place in Cote d’Ivoire.
The playoffs for the African championship will start in June 2022 and the 24 teams that will participate will be revealed in September 2022.
The 48 nations who had qualified for the group stages of the qualifiers were drawn into 12 groups in an alphabetical order from A to L.

Group A: Sao Tome and Principe, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.
Group B: Eswatini, Togo, Cape Verde, and Burkina Faso.
Group C: Burundi, Namibia, Kenya, and Cameroon.
Group D: Ethiopia, Malawi, Guinea, and Egypt.
Group E: Central African Republic, Angola, Madagascar, and Ghana.
Group F: Tanzania, Niger, Uganda, and Algeria.
Group G: South Sudan, Gambia, Congo, and Mali.
Group H: Lesotho, Comoros, Zambia, and Cote D’Ivoire.
Group I: Sudan, Mauritania, Gabon, and DR Congo.
Group J: Botswana, Libya, Equatorial Guinea, and Tunisia.
Group K: Liberia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Morocco.
Group L: Rwanda, Mozambique, Benin, and Senegal.
Even though FIFA has temporarily suspended Kenya and Zimbabwe, the two countries were included in the 2023 AFCON draw.
If the suspension is not lifted on the two African countries two weeks before the tournament starts, they will be eliminated from the competition and their groups will shrink from four teams to three, with the top two qualifying for the AFCON.
The FIFA council suspended the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in February due to their governments’ interference in their activities.
Kenya and Zimbabwe were drawn into two different groups to avoid having one group with only two teams.
Morocco’s Atlas Lions sealed their ticket for the 2022 World Cup last month after beating the Democratic Republic of Congo .
