Rabat – Algeria is once again pointing accusatory fingers at Morocco for supposedly orchestrating the assassination of three civilians using advanced military technology.
In an official statement quoted by the Algerian press agency today, Algeria accused Morocco of “repetitive hostile actions” that amount to “state terrorism.”
But the report fails to explain the details of the alleged assassinations, nor does it mention basic details such as the nationality of the civilian victims, or provide evidence to back such serious claims.
The official statement is yet another instance in a long series of baseless accusations that the Algerian regime has been quick and keen to level at its North African neighbor over the past few months and years.
Last month, Algeria accused Morocco — once again without evidence — of hacking the Algerian justice ministry’s official Twitter account, and of using the official account to spread propaganda and damage Algeria’s international image.
In that particular instance, Algeria’s state-owned radio station aired a full report of Morocco’s “cyber-attack.” It claimed that, during the alleged attack, Morocco had posted pro-Russian tweets painting Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, as Nazi and accusing him of mass-murdering Ukrainian citizens.
While Algeria’s accusations against Morocco have taken different forms over the past months, they all share one common feature — absence of proof.
For the latest accusations, Algerian sources are claiming that Morocco was behind deadly attacks on three civilians — without mentioning any details as to how they arrived at that conclusion.
In August of last year, Algeria severed cut ties with Morocco, alleging Morocco was behind the climate-induced wildfires that had devastated Algeria’s Kabylie region last summer.
Five months later, Algeria again pointed an accusatory finger at Morocco, this time accusing it of colluding with the World Bank to publish a reputation-damaging report about Algeria’s political failures amid rising poverty levels in the country.
As well as accusing Morocco of cyber-attacks, killing Algerian civilians, and colluding with the World Bank, Algeria’s accusations against Morocco reached new heights with allegations against ARTE, a respectable Franco-German channel.
In February of this year, Algiers notably accused Rabat of paying the channel for the production of a mini-series that shone a light on corruption within Algeria’s military apparatus.
Despite Algiers’ apparent obsession with Morocco-bashing, Rabat’s response to such allegations has traditionally been to ignore or shrug off what many Moroccan officials and analysts perceive as “unfounded” and “baseless” accusations aimed at dragging Morocco into a dangerous regional conflict.
