Rabat – Morocco’s ruling party, the National Rally of Independents (RNI), held a meeting in Rabat on April 8, with the coalition parties Independence Party (PI) and the Modernity and Authenticity Party (PAM) to evaluate the progress of the implementation of the governmental agenda.
The monthly meeting went over recent political developments, with an eye on the ongoing legislative year.
Attending the meeting were Abdelatif Ouahbi, secretary-general of the PAM party, Nezar Baraka, secretary-general of the Independence Party (PI), and heads of parliamentary majority groups.
Following in-depth discussions of Morocco’s slow economic recovery amid the lingering effects of the COVID-19 crisis, the country’s ruling coalition made an overall positive assessment of the government’s performance in the past few months.
In particular, the parties expressed their satisfaction with the Spanish Prime Minister’s recent visit to Morocco, saying they hope that the visit will pave the way for the restoration of strong ties between Madrid and Rabat, according to a joint press release.
Speaking of the rising oil and food prices, the coalition parties hailed the government’s recent decision to provide financial support to transit professionals as well as increasing subsidies for staple food to preserve the national purchasing power, the statement added.
The meeting also recalled the government’s efforts to support Morocco’s rural communities and farmers to mitigate the effect of drought, noting that the recent rainfall has positively affected the country’s water reserves and some agricultural sub-sectors.
Speakers also pointed out the government’s actions to ensure water supply for rural communities suffering from water scarcity.
Since the start of its mandate following last September’s general elections, the Akhannouch-led government has made significant progress on the social inclusion front, including the extension of the social safety net to Morocco’s working class.
The meeting was also an occasion to deliberate on the lingering challenges facing the coalition ahead of the new legislative year, with the joint statement noting that all the coalition parties are committed to overseeing the implementation of the government’s agenda.
