Rabat – The Speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives Rachid Talbi El Alami on Friday announced the official adoption of Arabic and Tamazight interpretation in its upcoming sessions.
Speaking at the opening of the April session, Talbi El Alami said the Arabic and Amazigh language interpretation will officially begin on April 11.
The interpretation will be available in plenary and weekly sessions devoted to oral questions, as well as during the monthly session on general policy chaired by the Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch.
Talbi El Alami stressed that this decision is “important and historical.”
The Chamber is continuing to work on integrating the language into education and parliamentary work , he added.
Akhannouch’s government has long expressed its ambitions to catch up on the delay of officializing the Amazigh language in the country. It already took the kingdom almost eight years to pass a law that institutionalized Tamazight.
As part of a law aimed at integrating the language in schools, the Moroccan government has allocated MAD 200 million ($21.52 million) for the officialization of the Amazigh language.
The government plans to establish a special fund for the Amazigh language, financed by the state budget. The fund’s goal is to reach MAD 1 billion ($108 million) by 2025.
The government also set in motion a wide range of measures to ensure a nationwide recognition of the Amazigh culture as an integral part of the Moroccan identity including incentivizing academic research on the Amazigh culture and using Tifinagh on public signs along with Arabic and French.
