Rabat – The “Her World Her Rules” initiative is set to launch in Casablanca on May 8, and intends to spread messages of gender equality through basketball.

According to the Royal Moroccan Basketball Federation (FRMBB), “young girls and boys in 8 regions and 24 Moroccan cities intend to benefit from basketball workshops in primary schools and middle schools,” in order to help them develop key life skills for gender equality.

About 1,000 girls between the ages of 6 and 15 are set to intend to become gender equality ambassadors in order to inspire other young people to promote the inclusion of girls on the basketball court, said the FRMBB.

According to the press release, 50 basketball coaches from across Morocco intend to be trained in the “Sport for Development” methodology. They intend to conduct sports workshops to benefit young people and reduce gender inequalities.

Furthermore, workshops in artistic graffiti intend to be held to complement sports activities and spread values such as respect, equality, and self-confidence.

FRMBB President Mustapha Aourach said that “Moroccan basketball has experienced a remarkable dynamic in female participation… as a result of the partnership and cooperation framework agreement that [was] signed with the Ministry of Education in 2021.”

Loubna Belabbes, president of the Women’s Basketball Commission at the FRMBB, added that “Morocco is full of female potential and talent in basketball.” She also highlighted the FRMBB’s commitment towards supporting this female talent.

A press release by the FRMBB has highlighted how the “Her World Her Rules” initiative is part of an international campaign launched by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the Sport for Development (S4D) in 2019. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The NBA Africa similarly organized a development-oriented event in Morocco last year, for the benefit of youth basketball in the country. The event held workshops and a seminar to help young boys and girls learn the practical skills of basketball.
