Rabat – The Moroccan delegation finished second in last week’s Arab Junior Athletic Championship with 20 medals including six gold, eight silver, and six bronze medals.
The Arab championship took place in Tunis from May 23 to 27, gathering 350 from 13 countries. The Moroccan delegation to the regional event included 28 athletes, 14 of whom were women.
Morocco completed the regional event behind Egypt which won 32 medals including 13 gold, 12 silver, and 7 bronze.
The 20 Moroccan medals placed the North African kingdom in sixth place ahead of the World Athletics U-20 Championships. The international gathering is set to take place in Cali, Colombia from August 1 to 6.
Tunisia came third in last week’s Arab U-20 cup, winning 15 medals including six golds. Following were Algeria and Bahrain which received five gold medals each.
Three Moroccan athletes and the relay team won gold medals. Mohamed Alateati and Fatima Aefir came first in the 3000 meters race, while Sanae Hasnaoui received two medals for 800m and 1500m. The relay team for women also finished first in its category for the 4×400 m race ahead of the Algerian team.

The eight silver medals obtained by the Moroccan delegation went to Assia Alhafyan in the high jump and to Jameleddine Hadili and Aya El Aqlewi in the long jump competition
As for races, Lamiae El Maemouni completed second in the 800m while Salma Alhileli received a silver medal for the 400m. Fatima Zahra Bardeha secured the silver medal in the 3000m run and her colleague Khadija Ansari received the same medal in the 3000m steeplechase
On Friday, Morocco won three bronze medals thanks to the performance of Fatma Zahra Al Chafayek in the 400m hurdles, Fatma Aefir in the 1500m event, and Mohamed Alattieti in the 5000m.
The other three bronze medals went to Salma Alhileli in the 100m race, Lobna Lahdar in the 3000m steeplechase, and Asia El Hafian in the high jump game.
