Rabat – The British Embassy in Rabat on Thursday celebrated the 96th anniversary and 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II while highlighting the long-standing relations between the two monarchies in Morocco and the United Kingdom.

British embassies across the world dedicated the day to celebrating “The Queen’s Birthday Party” and cherishing her life-long achievements and wisdom.

On a sunny Thursday afternoon in Rabat, vast British and Moroccan flags towered over the British embassy as over a thousand foreign dignitaries and members of Moroccan society gathered to mark the 70-year anniversary of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne.

Black Mercedes cars carrying the flags of countries from around the world crowded the streets of the upscale neighborhood of Soussi in the Moroccan capital. Ambassadors, local British expats, embassy staff, and prominent members of Moroccan society gathered to celebrate a unique moment in British history, a “Platinum Jubilee” to celebrate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

Starting with UK Ambassador Simon Martin’s well-intended, but very British, attempt at speaking the Moroccan dialect, the UK’s top diplomat in Morocco used the festive occasion to highlight the warm relations between Britain and Morocco.

Martin told Morocco World News that the Queen’s birthday celebration reflects the love and admiration of the British and Commonwealth people.

As the longest-serving British monarch, Martin said, Queen Elizabeth II has welcomed 14 prime ministers, attended over 20,000 official functions, and met weekly every Tuesday with serving prime ministers.

Her commitment to the British people and empire and her long reign “describes our history and our development,” the British ambassador said, noting that her reign witnessed the shift in the United Kingdom from a “remarkably large empire” to a “democratic” and “modern country and an equal member of the United Nations.”

Recalling the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Morocco in October 1980, Martin told MWN that “there’s a genuine affection and attachment to her Majesty the Queen [in Morocco].” He associated this phenomenon with the uniqueness of the royal tradition in both countries.

Aged 96, the Queen continues to head over 500 organizations in the educational, sports, cultural, and religious fields.

The Queen’s visit to Morocco in 1980 and her latest reception of the new Moroccan Ambassador to the UK reflect continuity in the 300 years of relations between the two Kingdoms.

These ties extend to the diplomatic, economic, and cultural spheres and underline the commitment of Moroccan and British diplomats to promote shared values.
