A number of Moroccan ministers and officials have attended the African Conference on Priority Setting and Partnership Development. The event is part of the UN’s “Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.”
In preparation for the conference, national surveys, workshops and analysis in relation to ocean science and sustainable development were conducted. The findings of this preparatory phase were presented at the committee meeting, providing the basis for a roadmap for Africa’s involvement in the UN’s Decade of Ocean.
Morocco’s contribution to the field has been previously noted.In February of last year, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa spoke at a meeting which announced the launch of the UN’s ocean science program.
Princess Lalla Hasnaa, who is Chairwoman of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environment Protection, spoke of her brother, King Mohammed V’s contribution to addressing climate issues.
Speaking in front of UNESCO representatives, the Princess stated “Thanks to His Majesty’s leadership, Morocco is today a front runner in the field of renewable energy”.
This year, Morocco has announced a number of initiatives aimed at tackling oceanic environmental issues. Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch has announced programs to keep 95% of fish resources in Morocco sustainably managed.
French President Emmanuel Macron has praised the efforts and “enormous progress” made by the Kingdom regarding ocean resource management.
This week’s conference, held in Cairo, has provided an opportunity for representatives to discuss how Africa’s ocean sciences should be supported. The meeting also included talks on future research into sustainable ocean management.
Secretary General of the National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, Kenza Khalafi has been involved at the conference. Karim Hilmi, Partnership Officer at the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection has also attended amongst others.
