Rabat – Turkish football club Besiktas Jimnastik Kulubu (BJK) is on the verge of sealing the transfer of Moroccan international Romain Saiss, the news website CNN Turk reported on Saturday.
The Moroccan center-back is expected to visit Istanbul on June 17 to finalize his transfer and sign his contract, added the report.
Saiss’s visit to Istanbul will come after Morocco’s matches against South Africa and Liberia, which will take place on June 9 and 13 respectively, as part of the qualifications for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Besiktas, which became interested in the Moroccan defender after the departure of the Croatian player Domagoj Vida, have reportedly already reached an agreement with the 32-year-old player.
“The parties that agreed on an annual guarantee fee of €1,750,000 while a 3 + 1 year agreement have also been decided between the Turkish club and the Moroccan international,” CNN Turk reported.
On May 31, Romain Saiss confirmed that he will leave the Wolverhampton Wanderers after spending six years at the English club. However, he did not give any hint about his next destination.
After announcing his departure from Wolverhampton, Saiss told the media outlet Brut Maroc that he is “open to any proposal, I really want to be in a serious project that will also allow me to continue to progress.”
Currently the captain of the Moroccan national team, Saiss has played at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and was named in Morocco’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He has been in remarkable form for both Morocco’s Atlas Lions and Wolverhampton in the past three seasons.
In the 2017-18 season, Saiss was crowned champion of the English Championship with Wolverhampton, sealing the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
