Rabat – Algeria will officially celebrate Eid Al Adha 2022 on Saturday, July 9, the country’s Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments announced on Wednesday evening.
The ministry said in a press release that June 30 marks the first day of Dhu Al Hijjah, the 12th and last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The Islamic holiday – Eid Al Adha – will therefore take place on the 10th day of Dhu Al Hijjah, which corresponds to July 9.
The ministry also announced that July 8 will be the day of Arafat, the ninth day of Dhu Al Hijjah. Arafat, one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar, occurs on the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Madinah.
On this holy day, pilgrims make their way to Mount Arafat, where they spend their day praying to Allah and reciting the Quran. Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farwell Sermon, also known as the final sermon, on the holy site.
Eid Al Adha, meaning the “Feast of Sacrifice” in Arabic, is one of the holiest celebrations in Islam. It honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail at God’s behest.

Worshippers traditionally celebrate the Islamic holiday by slaughtering an animal, usually a sheep, goat, or cow. They consume some of the meat with their families and loved ones, while the rest is donated to the poor and needy.
In most countries, Eid celebrations usually run for three days, with Muslims paying visits to friends and family, as they exchange gifts and eat festive meals.
Similar to Algeria, Saudi Arabia and a handful of other countries will celebrate Eid Al Adha on July 9.
Meanwhile, Morocco, Malaysia, and several other countries will celebrate the Islamic event on Sunday, July 10.
