Rabat – Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has joined growing criticism over the officiating in Egypt’s controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho did not hide his frustration with the refereeing decisions that shaped the closing stages of the encounter.
“This is theft, a disgrace by the institution that governs football. Why was the incident involving Argentina reviewed while Egypt was not treated the same way?” Mourinho said.
The Portuguese coach’s comments come after Egypt’s remarkable World Cup run came to a heartbreaking end despite leading Argentina 2-0 before the defending champions mounted a late comeback.
Argentina equalized through Lionel Messi in the 83rd minute before Enzo Fernandez scored the winner deep into stoppage time.
However, the final stages of the match were overshadowed by several contentious refereeing decisions.
Egypt saw a goal by Mostafa Ziko ruled out following a VAR review, while multiple appeals for fouls and a potential penalty went unanswered. The referee also booked four Egyptian players, along with head coach Hossam Hassan.
One incident that generated particular attention involved Hassan crossing his arms in an “X” gesture, FIFA’s recognized signal to report alleged racist abuse and trigger the federation’s anti-racism protocol.
Despite the gesture, play continued until the final whistle, prompting further debate among supporters on social media.
Following the match, Egyptian fans and football figures questioned the consistency of officiating, with many arguing that crucial decisions favored Argentina during the closing minutes.
Mourinho’s intervention adds another high-profile voice to the controversy and comes at a time when refereeing standards at the 2026 FIFA World Cup are already under increased scrutiny.
