Casablanca – Starting in September, a regular line of helicopters will connect the Spanish municipality of Algeciras to the northern Moroccan Tangier and Tetouan, reported the Spanish news platform Cadena Ser.
This air route will connect the city of Algeciras in southern Spain to the airports of Tangiers and Tetouan in Morocco’s north in less than 20 minutes, the report noted.
Undertaking the much-anticipated project is Helity.es, a company with extensive expertise in helicopter charter flights and which established a similar route between Algeciras and Ceuta for many years.
It is currently waiting for the completion of several administrative procedures before receiving the final license from both Moroccan and Spanish authorities.
Antonio Barranco, the CEO of the Helity group that currently operates helicopter charter flights between Algeciras and Ceuta, confirmed the launch date of the flights.
Despite the sluggish pace of the proceedings, he insisted that his company is at this stage only awaiting the recognition of the Algeciras Heliport as an external Schengen border.
Once the declaration of Algeciras as the Schengen border is made, Barranco said, the Helity reservation website will be modified and flights will begin with Tangier first and later with Tetouan.

Earlier this week, while in Dakhla for the Morocco-Spain Investment Forum, Barranco expressed his keen interest in the aviation industry and stressed he intended to lead the transport of people by helicopter between Spain and Morocco’s Western Sahara region.
For him, this line will increase bilateral tourism while also facilitating entrepreneur mobility, allowing Spanish and Moroccan businessmen to transit freely and rapidly between the two countries.
After the opening of the Algeciras-Tangier and Algeciras-Tetouan lines, this project would signal a new chapter in the Spanish company’s growth of its activity in Morocco, Barranco said.
