Rabat – Tayeb Hamdi, a Moroccan doctor and researcher in health policies and systems, said the latest increase in COVID-19 cases marks the beginning of a new wave.
The health expert attributed the emergence of the new wave to a lack of respect for health protocol and preventive measures.
He also maintained that the development is due to the “reluctance” of some citizens to receive booster shots.
Hamdi told Moroccan television channel 2M that there is a significant decline in immunity among the large part of the population who have yet to receive their full vaccine shots.
He forecasted that the cases and deaths will increase in the coming weeks, warning that the situation will undermine Morocco’s health system. The health expert also predicted two peaks marked by the spread of new variants.
He therefore called for more vigilance, particularly among vulnerable citizens aged 60 and up, and a fourth dose for people aged 80 and up and those suffering from chronic diseases.
Morocco has experienced an alarming increase in COVID-19 cases in the past few weeks.
On Tuesday, Morocco reported 3,059 new COVID-19 cases, one of the highest numbers in months. Today, Morocco recorded 3,141 COVID cases.
The number brought the total figure of active COVID cases to 13,533 as of June 22.
Morocco reported 1,192,797 COVID-19 cases since its outbreak in the North African country in March 2020. This number includes 16,092 deaths and 1,163,172 recoveries as of Wednesday.
