Rabat – Shakira, the Colombian singer and performer, and Gerard Pique, a center–back for Spain’s national football club team and the Spanish club FC Barcelona, have officially announced bringing to an end their 12-year relationships, after weeks of rumors.
According to converging reports, the couple decided to end their relationship after the FC Barcelona defender allegedly cheated on the singer.
“We regret to confirm that we are separating,” Pique and Shakira said in a joint statement. “For the well-being of our children, who are our top priority, we are asking for respect for their privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
While speculations about the two splitting up had been making the rounds for days, rumors reached a culminating point on June 2, when Spanish media El Periodico reported having spotted Pique with the woman with whom he is said to have an affair.
Journalists from El Periodico confirmed that the footballer was regularly seeing a young 20-year-old student. The identity of the young woman remains unknown.
The report alleges that Shakira later knew about Pique’s relationship through news reports.
Pique and Shakira first started dating during the 2010 World Cup after they met. Shakira moved to Barcelona shortly after, and they started a family together. The couple has two children, Milan and Sasha
But they never married, despite being one of the most well-known and admired couples in the global entertainment industry.
In numerous interviews throughout their much-storied 12-year relationship, both Pique and Shakira insisted that they did not need to marry as the “most important thing” was that they were in love and were “happy together.”
