Rabat – Moroccan international and Sevilla FC goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was named second best African goalkeeper, according to a new ranking of the Leo Sports Management website.

The latest ranking features the top ten African goalkeepers. Senegalise Edouard Mendy, who plays for the Premier League club Chelsea and the Senegal national team, finished first.

“Bounou, better known by his nickname Bono, is one of the giants of Spanish soccer,” Leo Sports wrote.

Bounou completed an exceptional season at Sevilla and has notably solidified his legacy at the Andalusian club by becoming its first goalkeeper to win the Zamora trophy for the best goalkeeper in LaLiga, Spain’s top-tier football league.

The Zamora Trophy adds to the Moroccan goalkeeper’s undoubtedly positive influence on the achievements of Sevilla since he arrived in the summer of 2019.

As for the rest of the ranking, Egypt’s Mohamed El Shenawy occupies third place, followed by Tunisian Mouez Hassan, Algerian Rais M’Bolhi, Senegalese Alfred Gomis, Cameroonian André Onana, Algerian Alexandre Roger Oukidja, Ugandan Denis Onyango, and Melvin Adrien from Madagascar.

Bono, as his Spanish supporters like to call him, was nominated by the African Football Confederation (CAF) alongside three other Moroccan footballers for the coveted prize of men’s African Player of the Year, scheduled to take place on July 21 in Morocco.

The 31-year-old has signed a one-year extension to his current contract with Sevilla that was due to expire in 2024. With the new contract set to expire in 2025, many football fans look forward to more outstanding performances with the team.

Bounou’s excellent season with Sevilla has caught the attention of many European clubs. As of 2022, the Moroccan international has a current market value of €15 million, according to Transfermarkt.

In June, the Sevilla goalkeeper became the first player to lift the prestigious LaLiga Santander African MVP Trophy, which rewards the best African player in the Spanish league.

In addition to his stellar performance in Spain, Yassine Bounou is a key player on the Moroccan national football team, which has secured its spot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
