Rabat – King Mohammed VI has emphasized the importance of social inclusion and family law, he stressed that all decisions and recommendations should respect the Islamic Law known as Sharia.
The King of Morocco made his remarks during this year’s Throne Day speech, recalling that all his recommendations and provisions respect Islamic Law.
“As the Commander of the Faithful, I pointed out before Parliament in 2003, when introducing the Moudawana, or Family Law, that I shall not make licit that which the Almighty has forbidden, nor shall I forbid that which He has authorized, particularly when it comes to matters governed by unequivocal Quranic prescriptions.”
He insisted that whatever decisions are made, he is keen to ensure they are in line with the Islamic Sharia and the particularities of Moroccan society.
Recently, Morocco saw several campaigns and advocacy calling for reforms in the country’s inheritance law.
In June, Morocco’s Association of Moroccan Women for Research and Development carried out a survey, showing that around 34% of Moroccans are calling to reform the inheritance laws in Morocco.
The survey in partnership with the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) showed, however, that 44% of Moroccans oppose reviewing the inheritance law. About 22% of interviewees, however, refused to state their opinion.
Family law is for Family
In addition, the king’s speech emphasized the importance of a family law that concerns not only women but also men. “The family Law does not concern men only nor is it specific to women: it is a law for the entire family,” the Moroccan monarch stated.
He added that the law should be able to give women their rights just as it gives men theirs.
“I therefore insist on the need for everyone to commit to their proper and full implementation of the provisions of the Family Law,” the King said, emphasizing the need to address challenges and negative aspects through experiences.
