Rabat – Abdellatif Hammouchi, head of Morocco’s National Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has decided to grant Hassan Chakour, a police officer who died in the line of duty, a posthumous promotion.
Hammouchi said the promotion is a recognition of the officer’s “sacrifice to protect the safety of citizens and their possessions.”
The DGSN chief also directed relevant authorities in the Rabat region, including the Mohammed VI Foundation for Social Work for National Security Workers, to provide the necessary support for the deceased’s family.
Chakour lost his life after succumbing to severe knife wounds in the hospital after he and other security forces tried to apprehend a person of interest. The stabbing incident occurred on July 17.
As the officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for his wounds, other police members were able to apprehend the culprit, who was arrested pending a judiciary inquiry.
A state funeral was held on Saturday for the deceased officer in the presence of several high-ranking officials from the region, with DGSN expressing condolences for the incident.
“Security authorities mourn martyr and police inspector Hassan Chakour, who died of an injury during a security intervention to protect citizens,” the DGSN said on its Facebook page.
The statement added that the deceased officer would be carried to his resting place on the shoulders of the honor squad, with his coffin being draped with the Moroccan flag.
