Rabat – King Mohammed VI has congratulated Morocco’s women national football team on their outstanding performances throughout the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).

Despite losing the Wafcon final on Saturday to South Africa, the Atlas Lionesses earned the support of Moroccan fans who have been left satisfied with the team’s performances throughout the competition.

A fan of the Atlas Lionesses’ outstanding Wafcon performances, King Mohammed VI held a phone conversation with the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), the coach of the women’s national team Reynald Pedros, and the squad captain Ghizlane Chebbak.

During the phone conversations, the Moroccan monarch “expressed his pride in Morocco’s qualification to the final of the continental competition, his sincere congratulations to [the team’s] technical and administrative staff, as well as to players for giving “the best of themselves and accomplishing an excellent run” in the competition.

The King also commended the team for their qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

Morocco’s women national football team earned a strong, widespread following during the competition for making history by reaching the Wafcon final for the first time ever and qualifying to their World Cup for the first time as well.

The team’s uplifting performances won the hearts and minds of millions of Moroccans, many of whom flocked to Rabat’s Moulay Abdllah stadium on Saturday to watch the Wafcon final match.

The Atlas Lionesses’ brilliant performances  during the tournament paid off as the squad’s captain, Ghizlane Chebbak, was named best player of the 2022 Wafcon.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) presented Chebbak with the “Woman of the Tournament” award following the game against South Africa.
