Rabat – In the wake of the Algerian-Spanish diplomatic crisis, Algeria’s regime decided to cancel a contract with Spain’s aerial firefighting work company, Air Planning and Solutions (Plysa).
Plysa offers aerial fire prevention and firefighting services in southern Europe and northern Africa, among other regions.
The canceled contract covered four Pylsa firefighting aircraft.
Spanish news outlet elEconomista quoted sources who said that Algeria’s decision is due to “the consequence of diplomatic crisis between the two countries.’’
Tensions between the two countries erupted in April, when Spain’s government officially endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
In response, Algeria’s government froze a 20-long friendship agreement with Spain.
The statement from the Algeria Presidential office accused Spain of engaging in a “campaign to justify the position they have adopted on Western Sahara in violation of their legal, moral, and political obligations.”
Algeria’s decision to cancel the contract, however, does not appear to be a concern for Pylsa’s mother company, Air Nostrum.
elEconmisa noted that the company is “confident that the break will be temporary.”
Sources from the Spanish company said: “We make ourselves available to the Algerian Executive to resume the service when they deem it convenient.”
