Casablanca – Seeking to further strengthen its diplomatic relations with the Maldives, Morocco opened on Monday its first Consulate General in the Maldives with the presence of Mohamed Maliki, Moroccan ambassador to the Maldives, and Ahmed Latheef, Foreign Secretary of the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The new Consulate’s headquarters is located in the center of Male, fewer than 100 meters from the late preacher Abu Barakat Youssef Al Barbari Al Maghribi’s Mausoleum.
According to Morocco’s ambassador to the Maldives, the establishment of the Moroccan consulate in the Maldives will contribute to the reconciliation of the two countries and the consolidation of the two nations’ long-standing spiritual and cultural ties.
This inauguration will also provide local services to Moroccan visitors, tourists, and employees in the Maldives, particularly in the hospitality sector, Maliki noted.
Latheef, for his part, emphasized that the opening of this new Consulate is a significant step toward boosting bilateral ties between the two nations and expanding collaborative initiatives between Morocco and the Maldives.

During the occasion, Ahmed Nashid was appointed the first Honorary Consul of Morocco in the Maldives. Nashid is a prominent Maldivian businessman whose interests include health and tourist development and promotion and who enjoys the confidence of the Maldivian authorities.
Morocco and the Maldives have had a long-standing friendship based on the protection of mutual interests.
The Maldives was one of the first countries to affirm its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara.
It has also signed a visa waiver agreement with Morocco in order to facilitate travel between the two countries.
