Rabat – Construction work for one of Morocco’s biggest theaters is underway in the city of Agadir.
The launching of construction work for the theater was announced yesterday during a ceremony attended by a number of high-profile officials, including Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, Morocco’s Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication.
Construction works for the theater are set to conclude in 30 months, and the facility is expected to boost Agadir’s status as a cultural destination.
Under an investment of MAD 250 million ($24 million), the theater is part of the Agadir Urban Development Program (PDU) for the 2020-2024 period.
Launched by King Mohammed VI, the ambitious program is projected to invest MAD 5.991 billion ($575 million) in Agadir’s infrastructure within an area of 11,600 square meters.
In addition to enhancing the city’s prospects for hosting business and cultural activities, the theater aims to improve the local population’s access to cultural and artistic events, the culture ministry said in a statement.
The new building will hold performance halls and theaters among other facilities.
The ceremony marking the launch of the construction was held in the presence of the president of the municipal council of Agadir, Aziz Akhannouch, the Wali of the Souss-Massa region.
Also attending the ceremony was the Governor of the Prefecture of Agadir-Ida Outanane, Ahmed Hajji, and the President of the Council of the Souss-Massa region, Karim Achengli.
