Rabat – Spain’s government reaffirmed its intentions on Thursday to strengthen relations with Morocco.
“Morocco is, no doubt, a reliable partner and neighbor,” Spanish government spokeswoman Isabel Rodriguez said during a program on the Antena 3 television channel.
Rodriguez spoke on the various partnerships that link Morocco and Spain, adding that cooperation between the two countries encompasses several areas of common interest.
In addition to the economic side of the relationship, she cited managing migratory flows as another important aspect of the relations.
Although Rabat and Madrid had experienced a bitter diplomatic crisis for around a year, Spain’s support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan earlier this year reignited the nations’ strong relations.
Since then, relations have continued to improve, with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez paying a visit to Morocco shortly after, where he met with King Mohammed VI.
Officials from both countries have said the recent developments mark “a new era” in Spanish-Moroccan relations.
High ranking Spanish officials such as Sanchez have also continued to praise Morocco’s approach to areas of common interest, such as combating irregular migration, calling for increased cooperation between the two nations.
The two countries are also collaborating on this year’s Marhaba program, which seeks to facilitate the entrance and exit of Moroccans Residing Abroad during the summer season.
