Rabat – The father of the 21-year-old Frenchman who was recently arrested in Morocco for his alleged involvement in a cybercrime case is calling on France to not hand him to the US.
“I urge the Prime Minister [of France] to contact the Americans to stop their prosecution in America so that my son can be tried in France and prove his innocence,” AFP quoted Paul Raoult as saying.
The father, 63, believes that his son Sebastien Raoult is “innocent,” denouncing the lack of judicial protection from France.
Complaining about the heat in the Moroccan prison in Tiflet 2 near Rabat where his son is currently detained, Paul Raoult said that it does not make sense to extradite his son to the US when “what he is accused of are acts he allegedly committed in France.”
The father also criticized Minister of Justice Eric Dupond Moretti, accusing him of remaining silent amid his son’s plight.
US intelligence services suspect the Frenchman’s 21-year-old son of being affiliated with ShinyHunters, an infamous cyberterrorism group believed to be “behind some of the most notable data breaches that have been made public” in the past two years, according to the cyber intelligence website Intel471.
The FBI thinks that the group has been involved in cyberattacks against US companies, including Microsoft. This means Raouult, the accused young Frenchman, could face a prison sentence that could reach over 100 years if extradited to the US.
Sources from Moroccan police said that the arrest of Raoult was part of a cooperation between Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and the FBI.
Raoult is a computer science college student. According to media reports, the French student was arrested in Morocco in June for alleged involvement in a cyber-piracy case.
