Rabat – Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz launched last week the “Rua Al Madinah” project, a massive infrastructure project that aims to raise the capacity of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah to host 30 million pilgrims by 2030.
Rua Al Madinah “will be implemented to the highest international standards,” said the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), adding that the project is “an indication of the continuous support from the Kingdom’s leadership to Madinah to consolidate its position as a modern Islamic and cultural destination.”
The project is part of Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030,” a strategy that aims to diversify the country’s economy and improve public service sectors, including health, education, infrastructure, and tourism.
In addition to rehabilitating an area of 1.5 million square meters at the east side of the Prophet’s Mosque, the project is set to add more than 47,000 hotel rooms, as well as launch open spaces and green areas “that will enhance the location’s serene ambiance,” added SPA.

In order to “facilitate visitors’ access to the Prophet’s Mosque,” the report noted, the project will also introduce innovative transportation solutions, such as “nine bus stops for visitors, a metro station, tracks for self-driving vehicles, and underground parking.”
Rua Al Madinah is projected to create a total of 93,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, as well as support the city’s residential and commercial activities.
Rua Al Madinah Holding Company, a public Investment Fund group, is overseeing the development and implementation of the project. The company “specializes in the development, operation, and real estate investment in Madinah,” SPA indicated.
The project seeks to revive Madinah’s cultural and architectural heritage. The city holds great significance for Muslims worldwide, as it is home to Islam’s holiest sites, including the Prophet’s Mosque.
