Rabat – Morocco’s Ambassador to Tunisia Hassan Tariq returned on Saturday to Rabat on board of a Royal Air Maroc carrier.
Sources from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Morocco World News that the ambassador was accompanied by members of his family and staff from the Moroccan embassy in Tunis.
On Friday, Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its decision to recall the Moroccan diplomat amid rising tensions between Rabat and Tunis.
Earlier this week, Tunisian President Kais Saied welcomed Polisario leader Brahim Ghali on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).
While Tunisia has claimed that Ghali was invited by the African Union, co-organizer of the conference, Morocco described Tunis’ attitude as “hostile and detrimental.”
Umaro Sissoco Embalo, President of Guinea Bissau, echoed the Moroccan sentiment as he left the TICAD meeting today in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity.
Macky Sall, the Senegalese President and Chairperson of the African Union, said earlier today that “Senegal regrets that this TICAD will be marked by the absence of Morocco, a prominent member of the African Union.”
He also urged Rabat and Tunis to “find a sustainable solution in the future for the smooth running of our organization and our partnerships.”
