Rabat – Morocco’s cooking oil brand Lesieur Cristal has announced a price decrease in their products made from sunflower seeds.
In a statement released earlier today, the company attributed the price reduction to a change in the international market of raw sunflower seeds.
Huilor, a cooking oil brand owned by Lesieur Cristal, will also experience a significant drop of 15% with immediate effect, the statement added.
The price of a five-liter bottle of Huilor recently reached MAD 147, far above the pre-crisis price that ranged between MAD 70 and MAD 80.
In its statement, Lesieur explained that the cooking oil sector has been greatly impacted by the rise in the price of raw materials, and the fluctuation of international prices.
Over the past weeks, the sharp increase in basic goods like cooking oil has sparked frustration and outrage among Moroccan customers.
Currently, Lesieur Cristal sells a five liter bottle of its cooking oil at MAD 152 instead of the previous lower prices that ranged between MAD 60 and MAD 70.
Moroccans have launched a series of campaigns to contest the ongoing increase in the prices of basic products.
Moroccans are also angry with the continued rising fuel prices, although fuel prices have seen a slight decrease in prices in the past week.
Moroccans, however, are calling for further price reductions s in fuel with hashtags such as #Essence_8dh and #gasoil_7dh.
Social media platforms have been buzzing with anti-government posts and hashtags calling for a substantive price cut. are also full of hashtags such as #DegageAkhannouch (Akhannouch get out), demanding the departure of the current Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch.
With hashtags like #DegageAkhannouch (Akhannouch get out), frustrated Moroccans have been taking to Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to denounce the Akhannouhc-led government’s unresponsiveness to popular demands amid skyrocketing prices.
