Meknes – The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has officially opened an investigation into Barcelona following allegations from Atlético Madrid that the Catalan club made an unauthorized approach for forward Julián Álvarez.
The investigation comes after a formal complaint submitted by Atlético Madrid on June 30, triggering a rare disciplinary procedure. Both clubs are now required to submit their evidence and arguments as the federation evaluates the case.
The dispute centers on claims that Barcelona illegally targeted the 26-year-old Argentine forward while he remains tied to Atlético until June 2030.
Following earlier warnings from CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín that the club would take action, Atlético filed an official complaint, leading the RFEF to formally launch its probe a month later.
According to Marca, Barcelona has been officially notified of the inquiry, with Joan Laporta’s board treating it as standard protocol that opens the way for their defense. Both clubs must now present their respective cases before the authorities review the evidence and issue a final ruling.

Despite the legal dispute, Álvarez remains Barcelona’s top attacking target. President Joan Laporta publicly confirmed a bid on July 13, but Atlético’s total refusal to negotiate has turned the move into a summer-long standoff, even as the player previously voiced a desire during the 2026 FIFA World Cup to seek a new challenge.
All eyes are now on August 10th, when Álvarez is expected to report for Atlético’s preseason training. His return to the squad should offer the first real glimpse into where he stands amid the ongoing legal battle.
