Casablanca – The Moroccan city of Agadir will host from September 23 to 25 the third edition of the African Triathlon Championship.

Co-organized by the Royal Moroccan Triathlon Federation and the International Triathlon Federation, this year’s competition will see the participation of athletes representing several countries including Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Mauritius, and Kenya.

During this event, about 30 elite triathletes will be representing Morocco in different categories.

This edition also includes a mixed relay race and an international age group race.

The African Triathlon Championships is an annual sporting contest.

Last year, the competition took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt from June 11 to 13.

Moroccan athletes Badr Siwane and Mehdi Essadiq ranked in fifth and sixth place in the African Triathlon Championship of 2021.

Last year’s contest saw Siwane finish with a time of 1:56:18, while Essadiq finished just one minute later, resulting in a final time of 1:57:32.

This is not the first time Moroccan runners have performed well within their categories.

In April this year, Moroccan athlete Jawad Abdelmoula won a gold medal at the 2022 Europe Triathlon Cup in Yenisehir, Turkey.

In the men’s division, Abdelmoula finished in 51:10 minutes, two seconds ahead of Hungary’s Casongor Lehmann and four seconds ahead of Germany’s Henry Graf.

Abdelmoula is Africa’s second-best triathlon as well as the 61st fastest runner in the world, who has been awarded 6 medals, 5 of which are gold.

In March, the Moroccan athlete also secured the top spot in the 2022 Europe Triathlon Cup in Lievin, France in the qualifier race.

Prior to that, he had won the Asia Triathlon Cup in Doha, Qatar, the Africa Triathlon Cup in Dakhla, Morocco, and the World Triathlon Cup in Tongyeong, South Korea in 2021.
